Cotoneaster – Spreading

Spreading Cotoneaster, ‘Cotoneaster divaricatus’, is a beautiful rounded ornamental shrub with pink flowers in the spring. It produces bright red berries in the summer and is one of the best fruiting varieties. The glossy, dark green foliage turns red in the fall. It is marginally hardy in zone 4. This medium-sized ornamental shrub matures at about 7′ tall by 8′ wide and has an upright columnar growth habit in youth, but quickly becoming horizontal and spreading with age. Spreading Cotoneaster prefers full sun to partial shade and well-drained soils, but is very adaptable and urban tolerant. It has few disease and pest problems. Its fall color is a nice mixture of green, yellow, orange, red, and burgundy, slowly becoming deciduous.

Sargents Crabtree – White, ‘Malus sargentii White, is a dwarf form of M. sargentii reaching 5′ in height and equal width often grafted on a 5′ standard to form a specimen patio tree, or one that could be planted in a bed with foundation plants. It is known for its stunning flowers. The fragrant flowers bloom profusely in the spring, opening from the bud red in color and gradually fading through pink to white. This dwarf flowering tree is perfect for a wildlife garden, as its dark red berries are edible. The summer foliage of this deciduous tree is a dark green color. They can be planted as a specimen or patio tree, and have moderate water requirements and a moderate tolerance to salt and alkaline soils.

Holly – Jim Dandy

Holly – Jim Dandy

The Holly Jim Dandy, ‘Ilex verticillata ‘Jim Dandy’, and formerly called Early Male, is best known for its shiny evergreen foliage with red berries. It is a much hardier Holly than others in its family. Although it has separate male and female parts, only the female plants can produce berries. (Use Ilex ‘Red Sprite’ as a pollinator to produce berries). In the wild, ‘Jim Dandy’ is found in wet soils, but it will grow well in average soil conditions and will tolerate drought once established. With a plant height of 3-6′ and a width of 4-5′, it is a showy plant in any garden, and it makes a great border planting.
